+**Cao Wei** (220–266 AD) was one of the three major states that contended for control of China during the [Three Kingdoms](/wiki/Three_Kingdoms) period. Founded by [Cao Pi](/wiki/Cao_Pi), it emerged from the fragmentation of the [Han Dynasty](/wiki/Han_Dynasty), inheriting much of its northern territory.
