+A **crenel** is the open gap in a [battlement](/wiki/battlement)'s rhythm, found atop a [castle](/wiki/castle) or fortified wall. This low, recessed section alternates with a solid [merlon](/wiki/merlon), allowing defenders to fire upon besiegers.
