Mississippian Culture

The Mississippian culture was a prominent Mound Builders civilization that flourished across the Eastern and Midwestern United States from approximately 800 CE to 1600 CE. Known for its large earthen mounds and complex chiefdoms, it cultivated maize intensively as its primary crop. Its most significant urban center was Cahokia, a vast city near present-day St. Louis.
