A rib vault is an arched form of roof or ceiling supported by a framework of ribs. These projecting bands of stone delineate the intersections of the vaulting surfaces, offering both structural support and decorative flair. Prominent in Gothic cathedrals, they allowed for thinner walls and larger window openings.
