+Saint Lawrence was an early [Christian](/wiki/christian) [martyr](/wiki/martyr) and one of the seven deacons of Rome. He famously suffered death by being roasted on a gridiron during the persecution of Valerian in 258 AD. Revered for his unwavering faith, he became a patron saint of cooks, comedians, and the poor.
