+A **shock wave** is a propagating disturbance that moves faster than the local [Speed of Sound](/wiki/speed_of_sound) in the medium. It carries energy and causes an abrupt, nearly discontinuous change in [Pressure](/wiki/pressure), temperature, and density as it passes.
