Syria

Syria is an ancient land in the Middle East with a rich and complex History, serving as a crossroads of civilizations for millennia. Its capital, Damascus, is among the world's oldest continuously inhabited cities, a heart of history and culture. More recently, Syria has been significantly impacted by the Syrian Civil War, a major conflict that began in 2011.

History

Following the collapse of the Ottoman Empire after World War I, Syria came under the French Mandate before achieving Independence in 1946. The mid-20th century saw a period of instability followed by the rise of the Ba'ath Party, which established a long-standing government. The country's recent history has been profoundly shaped by the Syrian Civil War, following which the non-Ba'athist side ultimately prevailed.

Syrian Civil War

The Syrian Civil War, which began in 2011, evolved from widespread protests against the government into a protracted and multi-sided Conflict. This devastating War has involved numerous domestic and international actors, leading to a severe humanitarian crisis, massive displacement, and widespread destruction across the nation.
