+The Union of Crowns is a personal union where two or more sovereign states are ruled by the same monarch, yet remain legally distinct realms. A prime example is the 1603 accession of [James VI and I](/wiki/James_VI_and_I) to the English throne, joining the crowns of [Scotland](/wiki/Scotland) and England under one ruler while preserving their separate parliaments and laws.
