Behold, an utterance of a decidedly informal nature, frequently and habitually employed in the articulation of a state of mild surprise—a sentiment not so profound as to warrant more severe locution—or, alternatively, in the expression of a certain degree of perplexity, bewilderment, and the attendant cognitive dissonance arising from circumstances that obfuscate clear understanding, (and which, perhaps, may even verge upon the frustrating), it being "What The Heck," as it were; this interjection, furthermore, serves with considerable regularity as a harbinger, a herald, if you will, of a transient moment, a fleeting instant, wherein the veil of normalcy is momentarily rent asunder, revealing, in its stead, the stark visage of abrupt disbelief or the unsettling disquiet of an unforeseen and profoundly unanticipated contingency which has disrupted the expected flow of events.
